Recently saw an instantly forgettable Guinness ad, and thought how sad. After all the crackers they've released over the years they've finally succumbed to utter mediocrity. In fact, I really can't remember the last ad I saw that registered as anything but blah. The only one I can think of in recent years that even comes close to deserving 'a classic' status is Cadbury's gorilla. Apart from that it's banality all the way. Is the Age of Great Ad behind us?

I guess the budgets were all cut when the economy melted down.
That Honda one was good where it was a sequence of things knocking and pushing other things over, lasted much longer than normal ads.

Advertising budgets tend to be the first one's cut in a recession, so I'd imagine some of the more outlandish ones have been scrapped recently because they are riskier & more expensive.

The meerkat ones are memorable, if not in the same league as the gorilla.

There was one I mind from yonks ago for teeth whitener - a man driving along at night admires himself in the mirror with a cheesy grin. The dazzling effects of his teeth blinds an oncoming motorist who then crashes his car (crash, tinkle sound fx). He then looks all sheepish and slides down in his seat.

It was probably made for about 80p but I liked it at the time, though on reflection(!) it's probably a bit tasteless. Not the teeth whitener, the ad.

Sony, with the paint
Honda, with the guy who ends up in the hot air balloon
The ford ones are quite colourful and seem well produced.
And the ones that make me laugh every time are the ones where the air bags pop out when they see an iminent expense, such as the washing machine repair or the wedding ring.
Also quite liked the Audi A8 ad with Simone White's 'Beep Beep' song.

Some of the "crowd" ones are quite good (if occasionally very annoying) e.g halifax (where they "stand on each others shoulders" to form an X, or the T-mobile Liverpool Street one. First time I watched this it really made me smile. Second/third etc times it became a bit more tedious. The one about the guy forming a band is a pile of pants.
Nothing beats the old ads (e.g. Bachelors savoury Rice ;)@ swee'pea)

On South African telly, Nandos always had ads that pushed the boundaries. One had an old, blind lady with a guide dog walking past a Nandos. Guide dog is distracted by the smells of peri peri chicken and the old lady walks smack into a light pole.

Lots of complaints that were shut up when the Blind Society stated that they found it funny.

You can search Youtube for Nandos ads, some are very topical and relevant to SA so you might not catch the joke.

i thought the nike sb one from last year was great

(that is the extended version cant find the short one that was aired on tv). Really seemed to capture the feeling of a long summer day out doing something you love (in this case skateboarding but easily could be bikes too).

the sony bouncy ball ad was great too and i've liked the series of orange adverts that are shown at the cinema.

Nooooo! the band one is the worst, but the crowd one's are nearly as bad - all acted out really bad and then pretending to be 'real' public. i think the Halifax one's are a poor imitation of the old BA ad, the one with the people making the face on the beach.

just tried to search for who did the music for the BA one, didn't find it as I found this and got distracted - must be the best ad' or mini documentary ever - a must see for fans of Concorde, it even has a shot of four of them in formation.
