Not sure what type of riding you do, or what bike you have but it might be worth having a look at decathlon if you have one nearby.
The shimano mt32 would be a good buy if you arent a mtb-er as they have the stiff sole, and you can screw off a cover to reveal the SPD fitting for when you want to go clipless.

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/shimano-mt32-shoes-id_8126372.html ***SHIMANO MT32 JUST £25.99 on this page -Bargain, might get some for just in case!***

You might kid yourself now that you dont want clipless, but one day soon you will want to and you will be glad of having the option to try without having to buy new shoes.

Ha ha, do you think, I like the idea of having a shoe that keeps your options open though. Will check them out, thanks for the advice!

The poor OP has said he doesn't want SPDs, and every single one of you has recommended SPD shoes.

GetAGrip, look at Five Ten, flat pedal shoes http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=63950 ,

or Six Six One
This pair can be used with or without cleats
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24882

Shimano flat pedal shoe http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=55371

The list is endless, but you want thick waffle-or honeycomb soles for grip and comfort, so google "freeride" "skate" or "BMX" shoe. Brands to look for would be
Vans,DC, Animal, Reef, Converse, Etnies, Six Six One, Five Ten, Airwalk (you can get these at Sportdirect for next to nothing)

Thanks Cubist, this information about sole make-up, is just what I need! To be honest, the discomfort may keep me off the bike, unless I do something quick!

The beauty of the SPD shoes is that they can be used without cleats, then if the OP has a change of mind he just needs to buy the pedals and convert the shoes.
