Here for rides.
they may have had in the past but that is a rural location and the houses in the background are on the very edge of a quiet village. If they were, they are long gone. further around the corner along the canal it is totally grass with no path visible. just seems overkill and there is no way I will do it again even on an mtb, let alone consider it for a tour. it would have been hell on our expedition bikes with front & rear panniers
yeah, it looks desperate. Presumably not NCN? That said, there are some narrows in West Wales on NCN I can't get my shoulders through without turning 45 degrees!

Such barriers do exist on NCN routes. Remember, the upkeep ond provision of the routes is down to the local councils. If there's a problem with local youths then the 'traps' are installed. I've encountered them on the Lon Las Cymru, the C2C, the Three Rivers, and on the TPT link from Leeds as well as one or two in Leeds on the Leeds-Liverpool canal as well as the aforementioned examples in Wigan.

when i cycled the liverpool to leeds towpath a section between bridges had been firmly closed off near aintree by what seemed to be a local builder repairing a brick wall , had to negotiate up a narrow makeshift spiral staircase ( like an old fire escape), complete with bike and panniers while being surveyed by the local youth , the numerous motorcycle barriers from that point was just a little tricky, biggest hazard was the wet muddy sloped embankments between skipton & leeds shod with 27c Michelin conti contacts an fully loaded panniers, oh an some nesting swans, but then its the variety that beats tarmac touring.

I forgot about the geese that behaved like rottweilers beyond Wigan. A rather timid cyclist had been prevented from passing 'their patch' for around fifteen minutes until I out intimidated them on my arrival.
