CANAL WALK

Eeeeeeeeek! I'm doing the Manchester to Todmorden Canal Walk on Sunday & trying to ask my neighbours to sponsor me in aid of a young boy in our road, the Ben Brown Appeal. I hope that willpower prevails as I've not done anywhere near that distance since last year when I only did the 15 mile walk.

Must remember the twin poles to aid my knackered knees.

Oh, come on, ask the rest of us to sponsor you too!

On another note, how many miles is it from Manchester to Todmorden via canal, and can one cycle it? Mr Houtkop & I were talking the other day about how to get to Todmorden from Manchester (only ever done it on the train / car) but we were wondering about the canal as a possibility....

It's actually 22 Dan bo! I will probably start at around 8.30, perhaps I should wear some ridiculous hat so you recognize me. I'm not really like my picture! Not so good looking.

I did the one around 15 from Rochdale to Toddy last year. From Rochdale it's a really nice path. I don't know what it's like from Manchester but I'll tell you next week.
It'd probably be a bit impractical to get people to sponsor me as I've no idea of how to do things like that online.
Savaghoutkop I'll let you know what it's like and whether you need licence from BW. If you do it's free I think. It's a deal more straightforward than the roads though.

Post a pic of yourself at the start and end when you've done it and I can do it off of http://www.benbrownfundraising.co.uk/ ..?

For more serious fundraising I've seen people use www.justgiving.com (although it looks completely different now to when I last used it; and I think that the site takes a cut).

Good luck!

Yip, but there are canals and canals...

I've only pedalled along one (in London) which was great on my little wheels as the side was all paved, but if there are long stretches that unpaved/uneven my bike wouldn't like it much!

I can take a pic Savagehoutkop but haven't yet fathomed out how to post it. Clever you finding website of Ben Brown. There's a picture on his site somwhere I think that I took, one of him and his sister before he had steroid treatment. I'll try to do that, thanks for the offer. If I cant put it on here, I could post it on Facebook.

Don'y know about the miles but I've cycled from Sowerby Bridge through Todmorden to Rochdale for a curry then caught the train back. The tow path was fine - not surfaced in places but perfectly rieable.

Well, I really did it! Struggled a bit during the last half as I think I bombed along too fast the first half. May I say I did it on my own as the last group from Manchester left just as I was drinking my starting cuppa. Don't let anyone tell you walking on the flat is easier, hill walking imo doesn't make your legs ache so much.

I kept thinking to myself what my Dad said the first long walk I ever did "I knew you could do it" - & was fitter & younger then, but it did help me to keep going. 22 miles is a long time to think!

I will post some pics for SavageHoutkop just as soon as I can.

Well, as seen in previous post, I did it, am almost walking properly now, little toe still quite swollen, so thought I'd post the piccies (reluctantly but as requested, as I'm not very photogenic!!!)

Please note the poster says Saturday the walk was actually Sunday when I was standing there, I think there was an event the previous day.

Please note that I was walking in aid of a local charity dear to me, the Ben Brown Fundraising Appeal and if anyone wants to donate the website is: www.benbrownfundraising.co.uk email benbrownfundraising@gmail.com. The actual charity the Lions were supporting has been covered in another way.
