I'm really getting sick of this illness affecting people I know, is it me or is cancer getting way more common than it used to be? My grandad died last year from an absolutely horrific long drawn out battle, my granny was diagnosed a couple of months ago and is now in and out of hospital, a 26 year old mate had a terrible time last year before a diagnosis and is thankfully doing ok after having a fallopian tube removed, another mate in his thirties is in treatment and has been for around a year, and now one of my colleagues at work, who went into hospital a couple of weeks ago with stomach pains, has been told he has about a month to live, if that.

Just fark off cancer you farking fark.

Sorry, had to offload that.

Sorry to hear about your grandad and grandma, and your colleague too. My father died of brain cancer and it was horrific. I was going to say that as fewer people die of heart attacks, strokes and other dieseases, more people will inevitably die of cancer instead, but twenties and thirties is a young age for getting cancer. Hope your other friends and colleagues pull through.

I don't know if it's becoming more common or that there's much more awareness of it. Years ago people wouldn't even say it's name, now there's a more positive attitude to dealing with it and ensuring patients live the best life they can. I believe it affects more than 1 in 3 people nowadays.

Sorry to hear it's struck so many who are close to you.

Is pain management for cancer a really difficult thing for doctors to get right? Because all I seem to hear about cancer is how much pain and suffering the patients are enduring daily. Such an awful disease.

There's a delicate balance between pain relief and euthanasia....

I empathise with you sazza, it is a complete bastard of a disease, my mum at 48 yrs, her brother at 60, my father-in-law at 64, and my oldest and best freind at 54, not one of us reading this thread has been unaffected by it.

Yesterday I recieved a telephone call from the aunt of a little boy, I entertained him and his friends at his birthday party 18 months ago, she told me he is dying of a brain tumour, actually it is the treatment that is killing him. I went to visit him today, I did a little magic show for him, made him laugh a bit, we had a bit of fun, made his poor mum laugh. He is five and a half. He's never been to school. He never will. I promised to go back and do another show for him in a week or two, but I don't think he will live that long. He never had the disease when he was 4.

Cancer is a daffodil, no doubt about it.

One of my pupils made a one way journey to Martin House Hospice on Monday - he's fifteen. He managed to do everything on his bucket list.

I had the dreaded disease. I was out on my bike yesterday wearing my polka dot jersey, enjoying the sun! Those who may think a mamil shouldn't wear something they're not worthy of should do well to hope they reach mamil status and not end up like the 25 year old on my ward who died of cancer.

One grandfather died with it after a few days diagnosis, that we know of. We think that because it was just after xmas that he knew and didn't want to ruin anybody's xmas. Other grandfather, a keen cyclist in his youth who toured a lot of the country on his bike, beat throat cancer 18 months ago after it was caught very early. And now my nan has just found a lump on her breast, 10 years after a stroke that should have killed her (doctor's words, not mine). Vile, sh*te disease and I empathise with anyone who knows of anyone with it or is going through it themselves.

I would like to say cancer is an evil disease, but it's indiscriminate and unforgiving.

Sorry to hear that so many of your family and friends are affected, my half brother and sister lost their dad 10 years ago, he was 38, my friend has been told by Macmillan to not put anything off as he can't have treatment for his cancer as he has a severe case of fibrosis requiring a lung transplant, he's on full time oxygen at the moment and needs to be in remission for 2 years to qualify for the transplant!

Coincidentally I'm doing a charity ride for Macmillan today with a major ride in the pipeline for next year sometime

I'm so sorry
It is horrible and I've lost lots of relatives to this evil disease.
My mum was 65 and died 5 weeks after her diagnosis of Pancreatic cancer; my cousin was 35, my gran (mums mum) was 48 and died of breast cancer (my mum was only 15), my best friend was 41 and had battled for 10 years. The list goes on.

On the positive side, they are making great strides in research but for those that have already lost loved ones, that seems small comfort.

This latest shock, the guy I work with, is pretty hard to deal with, as there are people in my office who've known him a long time and it's my job to make sure everyone is coping ok. He's also the reason I'm going to Iceland, all his stories about it being like another planet made me want to go... Ugh, just horrible when something happens so suddenly and there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about it.
