I'm planning an evening ride soon that will finish up going through Cannock Chase and ending at Rugeley (for the train home).

Are there any particularly good stretches of road - by which I mean scenic, hilly and especially with good views - that are worth seeking out?

Also, assuming it will be dry, how feasible would the wider forestry tracks be on a skinny-tyred road bike? I'll pass on the MTB trails, but google earth shows a lot of wide tracks running through the woods.

The fire roads would be do-able, but not sure I would want to on road 23mm tyres. Make sure you have some spare tubes if you decide to.

The roads around the chase are in decent shape. mostly covered in top dress. Grippy, but buzzy.

If you want to give your legs a final test before heading into rugely have a look at Stile Cop Road, just off the a460 before you head down into Rugely.
