Just to update the thread. I have now manged to commute in a total of 3 times, but its a start. This week I am going for 3 days. At least its not as cold today as it has been. I dont seem to mind the wet as much.

I can't be bothered to do any short rides, due to the hassle in just getting ready.
Hassle like checking tyre pressures and wheeling it to the roadside?

Agree with all above biggest hurdle is getting ready for and getting on the bike once there the joy of riding passed the traffic and not having to wait for buses/trains is mojo enough for me.

No, spds', shorts, jackets, gloves etc. Although saying that I did manage to get out over Easter for a couple of cheeky half an hours.
You don't need spds, shorts special jackets or gloves for "cheeky half hours", get out and enjoy these in your ordinary clothing.
I would say there is no need to beat yourself up about not doing a 17 mile commute every day, just enjoy the short trips.

Hence my half an hours. I had both kids and the weather was rubbish so it was a joy to be able to get out. Even managed to somehow get lost 5miles from home. Shows how little I know some parts of London.

I so know the feeling. I lost my cycling mojo over a year ago now. Combination of things really. All I can say is that it is very easy to get out of the habit of doing something and extremely hard to get back into it. The first thing I used to think about when I woke up in the mornings was if the weather was going to be nice for my cycle. Now the thought of cycling into work doesn't even enter my head.

I cycled in last week once. I enjoyed it when I was out but my morning routine needs working on. I need to make a conscious effort to go to bed early so I will get out of bed in time etc. I might try getting everything ready the night before again, that seemed to work the last time.

I've "joined forces" with some of my work colleagues for various activities so that is providing a great help on the motivation front. We've been to spin class, we went walking last weekend and this weekend we are going cycling (will just be a leisurely cycle as they both don't have bikes so not sure how they will get on. I have 4 bikes and they are around my height so they are going to use the MTB and hybrid while I dig out my tourer).

So just keep working on it and perhaps try different things. variety is the spice of life and all that :0)

Just a minor update. Today I actually had fun.

I hooked up with some guy on the a40 who was going to Ealing. I then caught the Uxbridge road into London. Given that I left much later (730am) there were a lot more cyclists on the route in so it was fun. I regrettably got caught up with the red mist so my legs are now killing me.

Up Notting Hill Gate I could not believe how packed the roads were or how fast and fluid some of the other riders were. They were just amazing and their pace meant I just had to watch them go.

Roads are incredibly crap I am curious to find out what thicker tires would do to smooth it out.

First day with back to back riding so will see how I feel getting home. I dont understand this wind, although its not in my face it does make it hard going.

I am sure the half decent weather is helping. I am not convinced its going to last and am still wearing half my winter kit.

My mojo has been absent for large parts of the winter, but I applied rule 5 as often as I could, kept commuting and doing Sunday rides, I also kept the turbo work going over December, January and February,

Now the weather is improving and the mojo is returning, this afternoon I found myself looking up at the sun shining through the skylights, looking at my bike, parked in a corner of the warehouse, and looking forward to the commute home.

I traded in both of the family cars, got a 2 year old immaculate motor, gave it to the missus knowing full well she needed it, to take daughter to childminder and to get to work, at the moment back on the tube which i hate, so my motivation is find a decent route and get on with it  I don't have my own car so i have removed one obstacle, second is the route then im done, basically not giving myself an option to go back to driving or suffer the tube!

Well after a two day rest, I must have had the wind pushing me today as I managed to average 15.5mph which is a whole 1mph more than I have done previously. Not sure what was going on as I really wasnt in the mood to ride at all.

Beers on me I guess (or cakes or coffees or whatever it is).

the trip home should be interesting.
