Canti brakes for commuters

I binned the Oryx Cantis on my LHT earler this year and replaced them with Vs. I found that when the pads became well worn the straddle wire would pop out of it's retainer leaving the brakes disconnected. Feel much safer with the Vs.

Tektro make a triangular, enclosed hanger - it ships with the CR720 but is available as an aftermarket part too (the wire is "captive" inside it) - I heartily recommend those. Jagwire make a really nifty straddle with a barrel adjuster (to get around the problem identified by smiorgan) - unfortunately it fits neither the Oryx, nor CR720 brake.

That's shocking. I assume you mean the place on the cantilever arm where the straddle wire nipple sits, or do you mean the linkage where the straddle wire meets the brake cable?

TBH it's something of a concern for me with v brakes anyway, since the stirrup that holds the brake noodle could become deformed so the noodle slips out. Link

Yeah it was the quick-release part where the triangular shaped end of the straddle wire hooks into the slot on the brake arm. I do quite a lot of miles in all weathers so my pads are sometimes very well worn, probably more than they should be, this causes the arm to go quite vertical and allows the cable to slip through. Probably my fault for being lazy on the maintenance.
