So one of the main questions from buying from Canyon is "what will happen if something goes wrong" until July this year my stock answer was "I would be able to fix it" but this isn't always the case. In July I decided to change the headset as it was well overdue as I used the bike over 2 winters in all weather and also strapped on my turbo getting sweated on and you could feel the headset was on its way out.
So I stripped it down but the bottom bearings were stuck solid on what is traditionally called the crown race and is slightly recessed into the folk, so a trip to my friendly LBS to help me out but because it was recessed we could not get the puller on correctly and it took a couple of hours to finally get off. This is were the fun started as it came off at a slight angle and badly damaged the crown race and pulled it off the folk. Looking on the Canyon website to try and order a new crown race I find a line "Do not try to remove the bottom cone ring" (crown race).
Canyons first response was I would need a new folk at £330 which I wasn't happy about they then offered my one at Crash Replacement price £250 and they would throw the headset in free, I reluctantly accepted this as I wanted to get back on my bike. A week later I got another email out of the blue saying they would send both the folk and headset free of charge as a gesture of good will (result :-)) so far this had taken 3 weeks. It then took a further 3 weeks for the folk to arrive but it was the wrong one :-( (SLX Folk) the right folk finally arrived this week and my bike is now back on the road.
It has taken 2 full month the rectify but they got there in the end, would I buy another Canyon, yes I would the 2 years of riding a fantastic bike at a great price outweigh the problems over the last 2 month, but the moral of this post is Aeroad owners be very careful when changing the headset :-)
