My father-in-law's Espace has a seatbelt sensor. If you don't buckle up, it starts quietly beeping. Wait 30 seconds and it becomes a loud annoying beeping. Oh, and it can't easily be disabled either (I guess you could pull a fuse if you really wanted to).

The Volvo we had would click if the driver wouldnt belt up. Annoying if the driver went off and left the car running with us sat in it. Best way to stop it was to just belt up, and there is nothing stopping someone putting the belt behind them and belting in.
Never really bother to look to see if they are belted. Not up to me, and some drivers are allowed to not have their seat belt on due to medical reasons. But apparently you have to pay so much a year for the privalidge of it being on your driving licence incase you get stopped.

Some still use the old "brace myself on the steering wheel" argument. One friend did that until I pointed out that hitting a brick wall at 30 would require him to do the equivalent of diving off the roof of a normal house and catching himself on his hands.

No idea if it's true.

Even though it's a law in the State I'm in (Massachusetts) there are many many people who don't wear seatbelts. And likewise, almost every week there is an accident on a highway (motorway) where someone gets thrown out of a vehicle -one can only surmize they were not wearing a seatbelt. I think it's less of a constraint device in an impact, but more of a retention device once a car gets out of control.

I understand that it's a contentious question of whether or not one should be mandated to wear a seatbelt, but given these reports I'm on the side of mandating it. Either that or ask people who are injured in accidents and not wearing seatbelts to be charged a fee (I'm for choice, but maybe you should pay for your choice?).

You would be better madating garottes. If every driver wore one I'd wager road traffic accidents would plummet.

I can't drive without a seat belt on, it feels wrong. A bit like getting on a motorbike without leathers and a helmet.

Can't figure out why so many drivers will only put the belt on once they have started moving. What's so difficult about putting it on and then moving off?

I have to say that when seatbelt use became compulsory I still didn't wear one. However, as I've got older I've realised that you can't fight physics, and that having an accident that involves a rear shunt, or a front shunt, wearing a seatbelt is a no-brainer. I don't like wearing them, but wearing one doesn't cost me anything.
