But insurance on cars is required by law, and is a licence to screw people over. The fact that other areas are corrupt makes absolutely nothing OK.

You are correct. The fact that other areas are corrupt makes nothing OK, but the poster was holding garages up as paragons of virtue, while slating insurance companies as the devils spawn. And in fact it is a legal requirement to have your car MOT'D every year, so garages also have a license to screw people out of money. and garages are also putting people's lives at risk with the shoddy practices they employ. Some of the work they carry out, or don't is not only bad practice, but people could be killed.

Ah Mandy. She described her life as "one slow descent into respectability".

How about phoning a few insurance companies (including the one you were with before if you can recall) and asking them, or try your local broker and do the same, rather than using the Internet to provide the info and generate quotes

Not sure if this was suggested before the more heated discussion started above

I would always tell everyone to shop around every single year for the best deal. Never just renew your insurance. Just like looking for the best deal on your power, or anything.else you are thinking of buying. :okay:

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Unlike Lord Astor I have nothing to gain by lying. All the figures are in the public domain.

2014 and 2013 were very rare examples of the UK motor insurance market actually making money. 2014's profit was minute (0.2%) while 2013's was small (about 1.5%). A profit of about 5% is required to fully cover investors' expectations.

There are some hideous practices in the industry - and I trust that @Phaeton reported the insurance company concerned to the police, because they were committing fraud - but it's still on balance a social good. Third-party motor insurance is mandatory for a very good reason, because cars are extremely dangerous vehicles capable of inflicting massive injury.

So would I. Both for household and motor. From the end of the year your renewal notice will contain a comparison of this year's price with last year's, so that you can directly see how much more - or less - you're paying. And if you've stuck with a particular provider you'll start getting nudges after a few years, telling you that you could save money by shopping around.

Having not owned a car of my own for about six years I'm considering buying a second hand car. Looking at insurance quotes but just wondering about no claims bonus.

When I last had a car I had 10+ years protected no claims bonus - can I still claim that or will I have lost it in the mists of time? Seems to make about £200 difference to the insurance quotes.

Have been on the OH's insurance as a named driver all the while, but that doesn't seem to count towards no claims.
And in answer to this very specific question - you need to talk to an insurance broker or an insurance company. Each company will treat you differently.

Would you please insure me, I am sure that you can do it cheaper than the £325 I pay^_^

I don't know what you mean. I still believe that insurance is in the main a money-making scam.

I see it as good value in the main. You cannot think that insuring me for £325 a year is a huge money maker.

I do not though buy extended warranties.

I have just had a layout on an incident, very quick and completely painless, fact is I have never had a single problem with a payout, mind you I have only had 6 or 7.

They take a risk so that you do not have too.

I got my mothers premium down from 1400 to 400 simply by asking.[/QUOTE]

How many claims have you been paid out on?

I am not a gambler, one of the reasons I am happy to pay others to safeguard the risk.
