I'm still stunned at the number of cars driving around in the dark at 6.00am - 6.30am with no lights on. I'm seeing at least 4 or 5 every morning at the moment.

I've passed the same people carrier (driven the opposite way by an older bloke wearing a hi-viz vest) the last two mornings and he's not had his lights on. Twice I've signalled to him that he has no lights. Perhaps by tomorrow he'll realise what the lunatic cyclist is on about !!

Either that or I write it in big letters on a sheet of paper and wave it in front of him tomorrow morning....

Not guilty mine come on automatically half the time when they're not needed!

That's odd. Most of the cars with automatic lights don't turn them on when they are needed. Usually they're black cars, too.

My old truck has a good old-fashioned switch. I can tell the lights are on, because there's light coming out of them. (And no mad arm-waving cyclists).

I also came across my first ninja cyclist of the autumn today.

No lights on the Roseburn path where I joined it from Groathill Rd South for about the next 1/2 mile. Very dark. In the distance, I could see something shiny moving - I thought it might have been a dog or a cat collar.

Once I got closer, I could make out a black shape against the black background ahead. Then as I got closer still, it became obvious that it was someone dressed in black, riding a dark-coloured MTB, with no lights. The shiny thing was the one pedal reflector that seemed to be remaining on his pedals. I think he was having trouble seeing where he was going.

I was soooo tempted to quip that I thought lights might be a help, but I kept quiet and shot past him, my Ay-Ups blazing.

The only time they don't really work is in the fog. Rest of the time very handy know you'll never leave your lights on which is why I use the auto mode.

You should come along to the Granton/ Silverknowes area there's tons of them. Usually its kids on BMX's that hunt round in packs and although they are usually on the wrong side of the road they're ususally a big enough group to see. Cycling up Crammond Road North last week, at about 11pm I came to a stop at the traffic lights and glanced over to see an older bloke on a MTB cycling down the pavement, not a single reflector and I hadn't even spotted him till I stopped

This is my first year commuting outside of summer (yeah, I'm a wuss, shoot me).

I'm waiting for my first SMIDSY, especially considering that my bike has more lights than most cars.

I've had my cateye's on full the last week or so when it's been dull at 7.45am, just to aid filtering. The BLT will be on in a few weeks - just need to buy a new charger from Maplin, as I've dropped the old one.

Been using them for over a month now - they were great in the dank, dull and wet weeks even when it was daytime. And now they're showing just how good they are in the dark.

Having them on in daylight really helps your visibility - they're sooo bright.
