Now that the summer is fast approaching i am trying to get the wife to do some rides with me. I need a bike rack that i can attach to my fiesta and carry two mountain bikes on it securely.
Never had a rack before so no idea what is best, a rear rack or a roof rack.
I am looking for some info and tips, any ideas guys???

I've always gone for roof racks.
But then I'm tall enough to comfortably get the bikes in and out of the carriers.
Also they're as solid as you can get.

I'm using Thule standard bars (straight into the cars proper mounts), one Mont Blanc and one Thule bike carrier. Stuck for choice I'd go for the Mont Blanc as it holds the MTB by it's wheel while I get the arm and straps in place. With the Thule you have to hold it while doing stuff. Both damn good carriers though.

I've tried roof racks and strap-on rear carriers and never been 100% confident in either. I've ended up with a Pendle tow-bar mounted carrier which is super solid. You have to fork out for a towbar but I've had loads of use out of mine, and I can plug in a light and number plate board into the towbar. I've transplanted the towbar bit of the carrier on to several different cars over the years. I reckon the drag is much less than roof mounting, which makes a difference to the mpg on long journeys (I have a peeps carrier so the bikes sit completely behind the car). Downside is I have to take the bikes off to get in the boot, but I just pack the car accordingly.
