Average speed cameras only record speeding number plates. What the number plate is attached to is open to dispute when the summons drops through the letter box of the registered keeper of the vehicle to which the plate is recorded as being attached to.

Ah OK thanks. I guess that "It was being carried by a recovery lorry" is a valid defence though.

You would think / hope so, but I reckon it would still be better not to get it in the first place.

Some years ago I got pulled
I was driving my land rover towing a trailer, the Trailer belonged to the scouts, the plate on the back was for the Scout van that had been stolen

Apparently as I had driven to my destination I had triggered several Number plate recognition cameras, and when I returned they knew where I would be, so as I passed the last camera the boys in blue turned up mob handed. Most disappointed to find only an old trailer and not a nice minibus.

They removed the old number plate there and then to stop triggering off any more of the cameras.

So if some some of the vehicles on the back of trucks are recovered stolen vehicles (or even just plain stolen vehicles!) they would cover up the number to avoid triggering off every camera they pass.

Well, I reckon I'm a bit wiser now, so thanks chaps. What prompted the question was seeing it three different times in one 40-minute drive into West Kent and realising that I'd never seen such a thing before this year.

BTW, in each case that I've noticed, it's been a perfectly ordinary motor car on the back of the wagon, and it's only been half the plate that's been obscured.

There are some cameras round and about that only check for tax / insurance / MOT being valid (along with the police ANPR cameras

obscuring half the plate stops it being picked up
