been looking myself ,van might go and get a small car, clio 1.5 dci seems ok.
had a few clio 's with no probs ,the D is super economic and goes well.

Geek alert. Your W124 had a Mercedes built transmission which was, as you say, legendary for being waftastic.
Sorry, I got it wrong. I had a W114, my Dad had the W124. He had it up to a couple of years ago, then changed it for a Ssangyong Tivoli :headshake:
They may well have had the same box though - 4 speed auto. His was epic, sprung seats - none of that foam nonsense. Potholes were meaningless and lumps in the road not so much as smoothed out but crushed before its might.

The styling is terribly over done (I use the word style very loosely!) and the rear view will be worse than useless, you may as well be driving a van!

Like you say, the designers and marketing people seem to rule the roost these days and the poor engineers just have to make what they are told, regardless of whether it is good or bad......
I saw one, on the road. on my ride home from work this afternoon
It appears to have 2 rear 'spoliers'
One, as part of the 'boot'/tailgate, as a 'lip', and another as an extension to the roof-line
Doubtless, some form of 'styling'..... or.......... are Toyota admitting that the stability at higher speeds is poor, & it needs these?

Do they do bicycles with automatic gearboxes as well?
Yes. As a quick google will reveal. Shimanos Di2 system and an alfine hub seem about the closest to how you would think about a car type shift.
Isn't Di2 offered, or going to be, with shifting linked to cadence, so just like a cars auto-box?

I really like Toyota CHR. granted the rear windows dont give much visibility out there which leads to rear passengers feeling claustrophobic but if your'e a two person family with occasional rear use, I'd go for it. The only thing I dont like in it is the digital clock.

Nissan Qashqai was pretty darn good too when I took it for a spin. Seems like a comfortable, spacious car with a nice glass roof.

No, not the best rear door/side-window arrangement
And, as for that 'wide-screen' TV!?!
I wonder what can hide behind that, whilst on the roads:unsure:

Not necessarily - Toyota often manages airflow off the rear of their cars with multiple devices. The Prius has them, for instance.

I have a 1.5dci Nissan Qashqai and love it, excellent fuel economy

Land Rover Discovery 4 here , auto box , horrible fuel economy but love it  . Put it into sport mode and into sand Terrain , blasts all the boy racers at the lights :boxing: . However , next car we buy might be full leccy , and through the wife’s business.

I forgot all about that TV thing. I dont really look at any of that stuff. I just look at the style of the car, space, ride quality, cabin materials., how it drives. IDK which model has bluetooth, tv, what hifi or whatever gadgets. I recall seeing a clock that I didnt like though.

Nice. I drove a 1.2 petrol turbo stick. I wasn't used to be a fan of stick + petrol in an SUV but they're pretty good. I'd probably stick with auto on german SUVs though, but I cant really explain why. I think some of them might not even come with stick.

OMG! I thought the Nissan Juke was ugly but I would not be seen dead in that Toyota...a huge blob of plastic creased/lined nothingness

My late father quickly jumped on the Jap wagon when I was a kid, horrible Viva's and Maxi's were junked for a succession of stylish cars, he had one of these in the early 70's, how can Toyota spend nearly half a century going from this to that fat comical fart?
