2002 Toyota Corolla, last week the speedo was not working on a journey. It worked again the next day and has been fine untill coming home from work, it had stopped working again. The display was still giving me real time mpg info though.

Any ideas?

TIA.

Hmm, how's the speedo connected - mine is all electronic in my 2002 Nissan. Lost most of my dash once, the fuel and mph dials didn't come on. Was fixed by disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes.

Might be worth seeing if there is a speed sensor on the gear box, and spraying the electrical contacts with 'contact cleaner'. Given age, could need doing. Contact cleaner has stopped my occasional 'air bag' light faults coming on. I would get either the driver side air bag or steering wheel airbag light. Pulled off all the connectors and sprayed the lot. It worked.

Is it an old style speedo like a clock ?..plus you have digital readout somewhere else on the dash ?
If it's an old style speedo theres usually a shrouded cable (not an electric cable, more like a very thick bike brake cable) running from the gearbox, through the bulkhead and into the rear of the speedo, they used to fray and fail.

Yes old style needle pointer. The mpg display is digital as part of the radio display. Just checked and edited the op, I put mph not mpg.

On a mark 4 Escort the speedo not working meant the gearbox mainshaft bearings were failing. About 50 miles further on, accompanied by grinding bag of spanner noises.

The digital mileometer on my van packed up three years ago. My garage said that it couldn't be fixed. I'm not that fussed.
