Is there a Smiley Tax?

Yet another myth, it's the Smiley Excise Duty, or SED. It hasn't been a Smiley Tax since the '30s. Buffoons ^_^. D'oh!! That's another tenner. Aarrgh, I've done it again. This is costing me a fortune. Noooo!!

Alright, I seem to have developed Smiley Addiction Syndrome. Look, it's not a problem. I can handle it.

So if you have a private/cherished number plate, you have to pay a fee each year to keep it? It's not a one-off payment?

No there is no annual fee. You have to pay a retention fee if you want to remove the plate off the car but keep it registered to you. This retention does run out after a period but can't remember how long, couple of years I think,

The retention certificate is for if you don't have it on a vehicle. IIRC, before the retention certificate came about in the 80s, the private plate dealers had fleets of cheapo mopeds to store the numbers on.

Luckily for you lot there is not (yet) a nobber tax or you'd all be skint!

I'm already composing a strongly worded letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer demanding one be started. It'll be a valuable extra revenue stream for the Treasu.....D'OH!! :cursing: Bugger, I've done it again. Maybe I'd better move to Ireland.......

Well the doctor can fix that for you, at a cost of course.
