My dad has bought a 2nd hand car and isnt taxed,he has since insured it and has the green slip.

His insurance documents havent arrived in the post so my question is, can the car be taxed online using just the green slip?

I would imagine....yes!!
DVLA makes computer check for insuranceMOT, its all linked up, etc before it accepts money for Road Tax. If he is insured it will be on insurance computer!!

its worth a try online if a few days have passed since the V5 was sent off to get the new one, as it may be on the system but the paper copy may be in the post.

What you mean is, it's not road tax. VED is still a tax, and you pay it on a car. ergo it can be described as car tax.
