Getting old but not past it

The tyre on my wheel barrow must be at least 10 years old but still plenty of tread left on it although it only does very short , slow runs.
I used to have a rather old but good condition camper trailer years ago...one trip I took it on, despite the tyres looking generally good, one blew out at 50mph ish. No drama, I left a trail of smoke and chunks of rubber for a couple hundred yards, but managed to crawl to a garage. They recommend that the caravan tyres are changed every 5 years due to ageing, most caravans do very low mileage.
The maths make sense, but are flawed. As a tyre wears, the rate at which they wear increases. They also cease to tread water at about 3mm, and that is the point they need replacing. By the time you get to the legal limit you'll have been driving on ineffective tyres for a fair while.

Which is why I replace at 3mm . 78% worn .
Police tend to give a vehicle defect rectification notice for most construction and use offences. Stops everybody saying they could better spend their time catching rapists and murderers.
