I would certainly give it a try. If you don't know what the grease is you can't really say what will dissolve it. The trick is to wipe once only and then discard the cloth/paper. Panel wipe (benzine) removes silicone and most of the stuff I've ever had on a windscreen.Would isopropyl do it?
Newspaper used to contain trace amounts of usable solvent but I have not tried that for years, the ink may have changed now that vegetable inks are in use. The routine was to wet a wad of newspaper with water and use that to scrub the windscreen. It works well for whatever oil splattered moths and flying termites leave on a windscreen. This oil was particularly tenacious but newspaper ink seemed to dissolve it nicely.
