Hi all

got a bust carbon seat stay on my Wilier. Had a look around the web and theres mixed commenst about whether carbon frames can be successfully repaired. Has anyone out there had a seat stay or any other part of a carbon frame repaired and if so how has it performed afterwards

i've spoken to a chap at a carbon frame repair place who indicate it was a very easy fix, so am thinking of going down this route at present

any commenst appreciated

What choice do you have? Bin the frame? If you can't afford to bin it, then you'll have to have it repaired. Vested interests aside, a man who specialises in repairing carbon frames tells you it's easy, but you're soliciting potential opinions from people on here who don't repair carbon for a living, as if you want to be told that it's not easy and it shouldn't be done.

Sorry, probably sounds a bit aggressive, but you asked for any comments ;)

Someone in my club had a frame that was sheared in half, sent it off to HQ Fibre Products in Norwich and now it's as good as new, obviously needed a respray but it's a lot cheaper than replacing the frame. I also know several people that have sent broken carbon wheels there and they've all been very happy with the results.

Yes I did ask for comments and was anticipating that I may get some feedback from people who might have actually had a repair done to a carbon frame - rather than some one stating the bleeding obvious and offering nothing but their own opninon. Sorry if that sounds agressive, but as you say I did ask for any comments - my mistake I guess

I've taken a few photies, but the frame is a gloss black colour and the damage does n't really show when photo'd, if I can get a good pickie I'll post it. Basically the tube has been crushed around 1/2 of the circumference of one side of the seat stay and is about 10mm wide. Have been thinking of getting it repaired and then overrapped to add more strength. Not really bothered about it looking a bit naff, just want to add strength to the repair.

Hi all

Thought I'd give you a quick update on progress with my frame repair.

I eventually had the frame repaired last year by CBS in the midlands. Chap I dealt with was very good. I was trying to persuade him to repair the frame and then over wrap the repair for more strength, he would n't have this though "Over wrapping is for cowboys" was the comment. I've done around 300 miles on the bike since getting it back, including some long hill climbs with no problems at all. I know where the repairs been done and to be honest I can't even see it, really made up with the results.

Will provide another update after I've got another 500 miles on it

the repair was about £130 plus postage there and back, so quite cheap overall compared to buying a new frame. Problem I had was that I also needed a new set of brakes / shifters, rear derallieur and hanger, so overalll £400 to get the bike back on the road. I've got some pictures of the before and after and will upload if anyone is interested, but to be honest you won't be able to se the difference.

At this pont I would add that the only link I've got t CBS is that they've repaired my frame - longevity of the repair is really the key issue so I'll let you know how i get on - ive got some pretty big cycles planned this year so will update the forrum on how it goes on the repaired frame

but so far, i'm rally happy that I got my babe back on the road

I have a mate who has fixed damage to carbon fibre frames himself. Specifically a cracked seat tube and damaged chain stay after a bad case of chain suck. Both repairs were with what was otherwise a structurally sound frame. Not suggesting you do it yourself but the fact you can I would imagine means a specialist could do a damn fine job.
