Hi all. hope I've put this in the right place. im looking at unis for 2011, and one of the ones I really want to go to is cardiff uni. reasons its a really good uni-education wise, is about an hour and 30 minutes drive from where I live, and want to know what its like for cycling?ideally want to go to a place where their its lots of oppotunity for cycling-road cycling oh and what is the weather like
think it will be my first choice, not their is a first choice but one where if I was accepted would go. my other choices are uwe at bristol, southhampton, oxford brooks, and bournemouth.

I know Cardiff Uni has a BUG, and ran some events for Bike Week earlier this year, and as for the weather - probably a bit wetter but similar to where you are ... like anywhere in the West Country. I like Bristol but then I would say that ... as you say its only a relatively short distance away ... why not go and explore each potential destination over a couple of weekends - you might hate or love some of them helping to reduce your list.

I've been a few times with Mrs 3BM - the city is very nice, lots of shopping if that's your thing and the bay area has lots of restaurants and bars.
I think Cardiff is a good place to visit although I don't know what it's like to live there. If you're going, mine's a pint of Rev. James please.

Cardiff, eh? I reckon it's got plenty going for it. Nice road cycling options in all directions; the city itself is flat; and if you get into mtbing you're not too far from Afan Argoed and Glyncorrwg. They've even got a little Boris-Bike-type scheme going on. There's a fantastic arts centre with a great bar (Chapter), the Millennium Centre, Senedd and other bits of the Bay are impressive, and the Millennium Stadium is great. The city centre on a Friday or Saturday night is a hellhole, and there's quite a lot of showy but ill-thought out development making hollow statements along great-city-of-culture-and-commerce lines. In keeping with this marketing veneer, it's easy to spend a lot on superficially fancy but actually very bad food and drink. However, there's a decent market, and a few good pubs and restaurants if you know where to look. There's a fairly bad statue of Nye Bevan, a castle and a nice park. It rains a lot more than London but a fair bit less than Swansea. Decent rail links and pretty good bus services.

In 1987 - 91. I'm sure it's changed a bit since then, so I can't really offer much advice, other than to say that when I lived at the top of Pen y Lan Hill, it didn't seem flat. When I lived in Roath, it did.
If you go, check out Mike Harries' Root Doctors. Nuttiest trombonist in south Wales by a mile.

Cardiff 100 milers being another one.
If i remember right they start their rides from the Maindy Stadium which is only just up the road from the uni. Obviously being on the coast if you want to keep it flat then you have the stay along the coast and enjoy the view. When you want to do some climbing then head for the hills and they are not far away either
Cardiff itself is a lovely city in my opinion, There's been a lot of money spent there in recent years and the city centre is excellent imho.

hi cheers for all the replies. Given me a few things to think about. im actually going to the open day a week friday so will get a look around the place. only thing that scares me is the size of the place, and im not really into to the whole drunken night out thing. however the course i want to do their is really good attached to a hospital. and seen their are quite a few cycling opportunities.

I went to Cardiff Uni ('95-'98) and liked the city so much I stayed there til 2004. The centre of Cardiff is pretty flat so decent for cycling, but once you get up towards Lisvane/Penylan (basically anywhere far out of the city centre), its hills all the way.
I liked the uni a lot and had a great time there.
Cardiff itself changed a LOT while I was there - the whole bay area was renovated/modernised, as were large parts of the city centre, and from what i've heard, now it's not such a great place to go at night cos it's full of drunken yobs.......but if you like drunken nights out, then I guess it's pretty good.
I moved from a small town in Devon (30,000 people) to Cardiff (then 300, 000 people) and thought Cardiff was big, but you get used to it pretty quickly. If you don't have a car, you don't see that much of the city really, so you don't get that much of an idea of the size of it. It is also pretty compact, and the 'student areas' (Cathays/Roath) are within easy walking distance of the city centre, which makes it easy to get round. There's a lot going on there - not just drinking, but classical stuff, lots of live music, all museums and galleries in Wales are free (which is good).
