I had mucho fun getting ready to go away on holiday as told in... Previous Thread
The first day of the holiday was like something out a carry on film, so figured It deserved sharing...

Roof bars & box fitted, all packed, loaded on Thurs eve, so just wake up Fri, dress breakfast & on our way by 7am,, Right? Wrong!
My bubs had spent Thurs out with thir dad, I didn't realise until several hours after dropping them off he had not returned #2's seizure & sleep medication or #3's inhalers...He agreed to drop them on morn on his way to work..which did not happen
Wasted an hour trying to get hold of him before calling GP to get emergency script for meds - we finaly left at 10.20am - roughly the time I had planned on actulay arriving!
The 3.5 hours drive turned into 7 hours, due to torrential rain - It had been bright & sunny at 7am Grrrr!
Traffic in parts of the M1 was reduced to crawl speed as wipers failed to keep screens clear enough to see out of!
My folks live just off J26, the campsite we were heading to is just off J28, as we passed J24 I joked (it wasn't a joke) if it's like this as we pass Nana's were staying there tonight!
But as we passed J25 the sky cleared, the rain stopped & a sliver of sunshine appeared YAY! So we headed on up to 28, arrrived at the campsite & shown to our pitch.. Which had a large bare patch where a very large tent had previoulsy stood, I unpacked the tent,( which I had only bought the day before!! A 'windshopping' look round a camp shop had lead to me buying an end of season sale, couldn't turn down, reallly must have bargain) as I rolled it out I realised it had been packed oddly, normaly the the top/fabric is wrapped with the groundsheet around it - Nope not this one as it unrolled I realised the lovely soft orangey fabric was now underneath on the sodden ground Great!!, I managed to flip it over & began pegging down the corners, only when tryin to peg in the first pole to have all the pegs pop out - The ground was so sodden they wouldn't hold. At which point the heavens open again.. I dived for the car!
20 mins later it all stopped & tried again to peg down the now completely waterlogged tent, again the pegs just popped stright out the ground, which didn't seem like your normal hardpacked campsite soil, it almost felt like sticking my hand into a growbag..?
At this point I had to go back to the office & ask for help...I hate the weak female feeling! Chappy came out & looked at tent "oh dear" my lovely new orange tent was now a mud splattered heap!
It was decided that it was probaly best to move me to another pitch - Seems this one had only been re-turfed recently & was probably not 'bedded in'
So tent was semi-rolled & hoisted accros the gravel path to another pitch, this one slightly dryer as it was under shelter of a large hedge & a few small trees.
2.5 hours after arriving my tent was finaly up... I was soaked to the skin, shivering cold my hands red raw and numb & now had 2 manic bubbas who had been stuck in the car while all this was carrying on, begging to be set free
I looked inside the tent..it was a good couple of inches deep in mucky water... 4 large towels later the floor was all mopped up, I wiped the sides down with a micro fibre cloth, but the bedpods which had come pre attached where still sodden. I decided at this point that I would just blow up the airbeds & we'd sleep in the living area, all other unpacking would wait til the morning & hopefully better weather. Any thought of cooking diiner went out the window too & the evenings meal was provided by the local Indian takeway - Mine was washed down several LARGE glasses of Sloe!
The bubs slept well, but i spent most of the night awake & shivering, I thought of getting the cooker out the car & lighting that, but figured I'd rather be cold than monoxinated.
The next morn, the rain had stopped Phew!! The bubs went off to play at the park while I attempted to set up camp... an idea i soon gave up on, the fabric to the bedpods was still soaking..and i was pretty certain that the temperature wouldn't rise enough to dry it all out...so a trip to the local camping store becconned - £55 for an electric hookup & another £25 for a fan heater
By lunch time Saturday the tent was dried out & I finaly got a round to unloading the rest of our gear & setting up camp - 30 hours after originaly leaving home!
Thnakfully the rest of the holiday passed pretty uneventfully,(apart from realisng that in the original kerfuffle packing the car the bag with my mums birthday present got left behind) it stayed dry durung the days only rained at night, we explored the Teversel Trails, Hardwick Hall, Sherwood Forest as well as visits to see various family members.

The campsite itself was fabulous, individual hedged pitches, graveled walkways & parking by each pitch, and I have never showered in such luxury..Marble bathrooms, automatic showers, constant hot water. I'm alreday looking forward to returning next year.

Well you can't say your life is ever dull. Great tale though and all too easy to imagine happening to myself. I've come close to such an outing but never quite hit your highs

Campings ace isnt it!

BTW The pegs may have been bobbins to start with, often you get cheapo bendy things with a fairly decent tent that wont go deep enough.

And good call on the cooker BTW Theres been a few media reported deaths lately were people have gassed themselves with BBQs etc after bringing them into their tents

I'm certainly loving the 'tent life' especilay as i now have a tent I can actulay stand up in & don't have to crawl round on hands & knees to get dressed
and I have alreday planned our holiday for the Easter break next year
I also bought some rock pegs, they had them on sale in the local camp shop & after some of the flinty pitchses i've been on before figured they were a good bargain.

On the Saturday - after finaly gettign unpacked, we were driving to my mums about 20 miles away - It was on the radio about a family being killed by CO2 poisoning, I then heard reports of 3 others too! I have always used a campinggaz lantern, in my much smaller tent it not only provided adequate light but it warmed us up too when it got chilly.. Next on my shooping list is an electric light, no more gas in my tent!!

Make sure the 'leccy one is a good un, I've had a few that just arent bright enough, then again I go for head torches now. Dont chuck the gaz one tho just use it outside/tent open as they give great light off compared to the leccy ones.

And yes the ability to stand in a tent is vastly underated lol

Golden rule of the tent. Put the flysheet up first! glad it all dried out tho.
Looks like you had true holiday fun non the less, also Brick and mortar showers with hot water are indeed bliss, Me and Calibanzwei spent one january at a campsite and the showers were brilliant for warming you up.
they laughed at us when we showed up with a tent but we managed it

The gaz one will be staying, for excatly those reasons, and my little Vango tent has done us well all summer. All he cooking has been done outside & we only had two nights out of over 40 that it rained (and they were after we'd gone to bed), it was only the getting dressed bit that bothered me, having to wriggle into shorts while lying down, then pull my top while kneeling - But figured an upgrade was due & seeing as the 'sales' were on it'd be silly not to... But the difference the headheight made was amazing, wish i'd bought a taller one before LOL!

It's an all in one tent, one of those with a sewn in bathtub groundsheet, although it did come with a sepearte 'footprint' sheet.
Last campsite we went to the showers were in a delapadated portcabin, I showered in my Crocs, now ay was my bare touching that floor!
Just remebered I took some pics of the facilities...a woman gave me a funny look as I wandered round them snapping away, I sort of smiled & mumbled "How impressive" they were, she laughed & said she'd had to take pics of them when they arrived too!

mrs steve and i both had a chuckele thing yep been there done that ! we thoughrally comend you on your tenacity :hello: :hello:

Impressive looking facilioties for a camp site. We have experienced everything from 5 star to 1 porta loo in the corner of a muddy field and generally enjoyed it all.

You either see the attraction of camping or you dont, one thing I havent come across a small child who didnt think it a great adventure. My teenagers still enjopy it and prefer the rougher sites where we can light fires and chill out more.

Hope you have many more succesfull holidays with a bit less stress than this one.

PS make sure youir tent is absolutely dry before stoering it or mold will ruin it .

Glad it worked out in the end and the loos look fantastic ... I haven't ever used electric hook up but as a back up for lights I find those UFO lights given out a good amount of light for their size, and the boys could have one in their sleeping pod too.

I just got back from camping at 'Bingley Music Live' - we stayed on the local sports club nearby.

Top stuff, its not a dedicated site but 2 great fields and a bar very generously erected just outside one of the fields meant for a great experience. Although as it was a sports club the showers were communal......:biggrin:

Only bad thing was there was no fires/stoves allowed, from chatting to one of the organisers some of the members had taken a lot of persuading and this was one of the the deal breakers.

Good site and hope to stay there next year.....
