Geek alert incoming:

This is part of a deleted scene where we see John persuading his mom to enable the the T-800's learning computer - Skynet normally has this enabled but for missions like this it disables it - this is why we see the Terminator later doing things like getting the hidden keys for the police van rather than hotwiring it.

Still don't understand why they didn't just use Danny DeVito though.....
