Hi

I am trying to get more hands on with my bike maintenance but am a little confused by 8/9 speed cassettes and freehubs etc.

Please can anybody help me. I have a Merida Ride 75 road bike with Sunrace gears and 8 speed cassette. I am led to believe that this would be compatible with a shimano wheel/free hub, can anyone confirm that??

The reason I ask is I am trying to buy a cheap rear wheel and cassette to run on my turbo trainer. The cassette I was going to buy is the same that I currently have fitted so i knew it would be compatible with the rest of my bike but I do not know if I can put the 8 speed cassette onto a wheel that states a 9 speed freehub or an 8/9 freehub?

Grateful for any advise

Thank

As far as I know Sunrace and Shimano are compatable.

Sheldon confirms that the Sunrace cassette is compatible

Re the hub -there used to be a difference as old 8 speed uniglides had a slightly different pattern but that was years ago - all modern Hyperglides are interchangeable so the same freehub accepts 8 or 9 or 10 speeds.

Just to dispel any doubt - make sure that one of the splines is wider than the others as per the pic in that first Sheldon link.
