Cassette help needed

I am thinking of changing the cassette on my winter bike to make the steep hills near me more manageable. I have Sora 9 speed and 12-26T or 11-26t (I can't remember off hand). I was looking for 28t but I can only find a 30T cheap at CRC. I am fine with this, but will my rear derailleur cope with it and will I have to buy a new chain as well?

depends on the rear mech; long arm will, short arm won't. changing the chain and cassette together is always recommended…

SRAM do the PG-950 in 11-28. My CAAD8 came with the 11-26 before I upgraded. You may get away with that with your current derailleur but will possibly need an extra link or two in the chain.

Hi,

Its certainly 28 compatible and very unlikely not to be able to handle 30.
If your chain is a sensible length, i.e. the derailleur arm doesn't point a
lot forward on big/big then it will be fine as a relatively new chain.

Though as pointed out in lots of other threads, perhaps also get
a new chain and start rotating them, it makes a lot of sense.

rgds, sreten.

Not tried with 30t, but I have used a short cage rear mech successfully with a 13-29 set up (Campag).

I'm currently on 12-29 cassette with long cage. I find it a good match with standard front 39-53 for the hills. It means you don't really sacrifice your high/fast gears in same way you would with compact.
