While cleaning my bike with wheels off I noticed a small bit of play with the cassette, which I fitted a few days ago. Lockring is tight so wondering whether it is normal; of course the play might be in the freehub but not removed cassette yet. I've ridden bike and seems to be shifting OK.

From experience it can be either be the free hub shoulder being a bit worn which a shim usually sorts - or the free hub bearings are worn which is also easily sorted.

Could be to do with the spacers you have fitted before cassette. I had the same with shimano 10 speed cassette on mavic kysriuum wheels. Took some googling to find which was the right spacer to use !

Never fitted a spacer to the wheel. Simply removed one 8 sp cassette and replaced it anew.

Just had another look. It rocks side to side and also moves slightly if I try to move it along the freehub, albeit my small amount.
Sounds like one of the bearings is worn, you can carry on riding and ime it'll just get worse quickly.

It's only a few pence for loose bearings or a few quid per sealed besring.

Which free hub is it?

The bike is here:-

So I possibly need to replace the bearing(s) in the freehub?

Is it easy to do?
It depends entirely on the free hub..most can be serviced really easily, some just can't be done.

It could also be as simple as tightening the cone, like I said it depends. Tell us what sort it is, maybe someone can be more helpful.

Wish I could tell you what type it is. I know next to nothing about freehubs! I could get a photo but not sure it would help with cassette on.

When you say freehub are you talking only about the splined thing that cassette sits on are the whole unit along axle? Not exactly sure where the bearing is that you speak of!

I assume the freehub should be solid, i.e no play?

If the cassette sprockets can move in relation to each other then the issue is merely spacers or lockring not done up tight enough.

If a tight lockring can move in relation to the hub shell then it is the freehub, if you are lucky it is the freehub fixing bolt not done up tight enough (try 12mm hex key). Otherwise given it is a Specialized own brand hub it is new hub/wheel time - while you MIGHT just be able to get a replacement freehub unless you can claim warranty it probably makes no economical sense, and certainly you won't find parts for those freehubs and in any case they are not designed to be disassembled.
