My last two jeans wore the dye out in a distinctly saddle-shaped patch on the seat. My problem is that trousers are a huge burden to carry in a bag already near the bursting point with folders, a D-lock, lunch, and a shirt. Also, I'm not a big fan of 'show and tell', if you know what I mean.

Can I buy some trousers which won't wear out from cycling, but which I can wear all day?

Albeit low stocks

M&S have just started selling cycling chinos too!

Why not attach the D Lock to your frame to save carrying it

Or get panniers?

I can only really have one bike, so I chose to make it a 'best bike' (especially since it was on sale) - it doesn't support panniers, but I've been happy with a rucksack so far. That said, if it comes to it, I can just store trousers in my locker, where I already keep a non-cycling jacket.

The problem is that my changing room is the larger cubicle in the toilets, so ideally I could avoid having to change my trousers in there and having them trail over the floor in the process.

Topeak beam rack? Q/R - on for the commute, off for the weekend.

Seems they're out of stock of those Union 34s, but I guess that's how sales go. Unless anyone has anything else to add, I think I'll buy those M&S chinos.

Well, in the end I went with Endura Hummvees. Union34 didn't stock my size, and M&S's range were cycling chinos but didn't seem to offer much beyond comfort i.e. durability. I wouldn't normally buy pitch-black trousers, but on the fashion end of things, finding shirts to complement shouldn't be too big a task.

I decided that it would be best to leave one pair of normal jeans at college, and change between them and the Hummvees. It should hopefully only add a minute, including having to put the Hummvees back in the locker afterwards.

Funny, really. That's the last lifestyle change I need to make for a full transition to Lycra. I'd just need to buy some bib shorts.

The Union trousers are excellent. I haven't tried the M&S Chinos, but a friend who has both says they are very similar.

Not long enough to judge - a few months.

A few months is definitely longer than my jeans were lasting. I think I'll stick with the cycle trousers/pedestrian trousers idea, but I'm eying up the non-skinny Levi's Commuter 508s as something worth saving for. The stuff I get from Primark develops holes pretty quickly, and the dye rubs out even quicker.
