Put a bell around its neck. Both the birds and the cat have their freedom and no other contraption needed.

in my experience they dont work, our cat has a collar with a bell and still manages to catch birds and mice

I discovered the house is now very empty without a cat in it, so you know its only a matter of time before you end up with a kitten, so you may as well get it now.
