I've had 7 cats over the 33+ years with our fireplace. it was only the 2 black cats that did this

We had two black and white cats that loved our fire.
One was stupid, we called him pinhead - he managed to burn his tail.
Both would lie on their backs in front of the fire, basking in the heat, legs pointing in the air. Seems a good life.

Aarrgghh, footwear on the table - ! My nan would have gone nuts if we'd done it in our house back in the day - !
As she was a Lancashire lass, apparently this originates from the legend / custom of if a man was killed down the mine or other works, his foreman would bring his boots to the house and put them on the table in the kitchen, thus the wife, now widow would know what had happened without anything needing to be said. The widow could then sell the boots to help make ends meet.
