Has anyone experience with elderly cats and cat flaps?
Moving house hopefully soon and our cat is ok ATM but thinking long term about putting a bigger flap in to make it easier when they are older. It will be through a wall

We always had cat flaps for our cats. If they have used them as young cats they continue to manage as they get older. It’s the other stuff like deafness and losing their sight that causes issues, when they can’t hear and see you too well they get confused.
We have had 6 cats over the years, one got run over but the others lived in to their late teens before kidney failure got them. Which is really distressing as they become confused and distressed . The last one to go wasSmarty who is here bossing my daughters dogs when they live with us for a year.

How come you can’t put one in the door.

the door will be a double glazed sliding patio door so really feasible

One of the great mysteries of having cats.
We use a clay litter for our cats as it's about the consistency of coarse sand and they much prefer it.
However, can any cat parent explain how our lot can go from the kitchen where the tray is, along a carpeted lobby, up a carpeted staircase, along a carpeted landing and STILL manage to dump some grains of litter on the bed - ?🐱

The litter is on their bum and they rub it on your sheets?

We have a stone block on the outside to help her climb up to it, and I have on my jobs list, making a wooden step to
match on the inside. She's 11 or 12 now and still agile but it does look an awkward hop

We have 3 cats, 2 of them are massive Maine Coons so we've got what;s termed a large cat/small dog catflap which they use. Oscar the biggest is enormous, around 12kg so he struggles to squeeze through these days ^_^. Quite funny watching him. His fault, he eats too much!
Fortunately we've a huge garden which we've cat proofed so they go outside for toilet stuff so no litter trays and this also means they are kept away from road. In the past we've lost a few on road which is heart breaking so we got entire garden fenced in. Only issue we get is occasional break in by badgers which then means repair work by your truly. We live in rural area surrounded by fields so plenty other wildlife around.
