Just wondering what reaction people get who are Catholics and go and get their ashes anywhere other than the West of Scotland??

And if you are not a catholic what is your reaction to people you encounter on Ash Wednesday with them??

Just wondering as in the West of Scotland I always think the attitude and comments I've heard in the past is shocking due to the inbred bigotry here.

Just interested!

I'd murder bigots, I hate them!

Being brought up in a 'Protestant' area of Belfast and going to a 'Protestant' school I didn't see people with ashes on their forehead until in my teens. It was a little strange at first as I didnt understand and just thought they had forgotten to wash. Then, after I found out what it was about I just took it as part of who they are, just like wearing a turban. Loads of people I work with did it yesterday.

When I used to get my ashes (no longer a believer) I never once had any bigoted comment made towards me, and I most definitely live in the West of Scotland! ;)

Me neither but I can't remember the last time i did. No longer a believer. But in places I've worked in the past there have been some shocking comments.

I think you are referring to a very localised part of the west of Scotland.
Since when did Glasgow justify a capital W?;)

Not really, worked with people from Ayrshire to Harthill and have experienced extreme bigotry from a small minority from all areas.

With two sons at a Catholic Primary, although not a Catholic myself, I have never seen any bigotry or reaction to Ash Wednesday sacramental usage in my area and I'm usually pretty sensitive to this as I have a foot in both camps.

By and large tolerance is widespread amongst adults, although there may be some incredulous looks and finger pointing. The exception would be children the same age from other schools who use this as a means to create a divide. Unfortunately I don't see their parents correcting their cruel jibes too often. "Holly Bogies, pick their noses" is the most frequent thing I have heard from kids at the school next door with an adjoining playing field. You would think the physical proximity would give both Heads the opportunity to teach the children about tolerance, understanding and working together and maybe plan joint projects to give the children a chance to mix, but I cannot think when this last happened.

Chaming turn of phrase. And the reason for swearing was?????????????
Haha so you go and post threads including semi naked women (i have no problem with that btw, just kind of hypocritical), then complain because someone implied a swear word, without actually swearing...

I used to, a long time ago, wear it them ash Wednesday ... no one ever said anything, but Liverpool does have a very large Catholic population so maybe that has a lot to do with it

I heard a catholic on the radio a few years ago having a go at a woman who said she was a "white witch" and attacking her beliefs as "irrational". I'm afraid peculiar voodoo rituals like smearing ash on your face don't make me think of catholicism as a bastion of rationality.
