My car was rearended once. I stopped because some pedestrians were crossing in the road at a pedestrian crossing (against the red man I had a green light) and a volvo ploughed into my beloved metro totally writing it off without even scratching their car! I didn't think to blame the pedestrians for a second, only the dozy idiot who was following too close and not paying attention.

As others have said, not your fault and your are only a witness as you were not involved in the collision.

If you are asked for details, it can take some time for them to get round to asking you about it. It may be worth writing it all down now while it is fresh. Last time I was a witness to an accident (not that it happens a lot, this was several years ago) I took screengrabs of the arial photo from google maps and drew on it to illustrate who did what. When the insurance compenaies eventually asked for details, I sent them both the same writup and illustrations. I think all I put on thier forms was the baic details and a comment to see the attached.

Definitely not your fault so don't feel to bad about it. Happened to me on my motorbike when a ped stepped into the road and the cabbie in front of me stopped and I didnt (not until I hit the cab anyway). Certainly didn't blame the cabbie or ped it was my own stupid fault for being to close.

Pretty much as every one else said. You are in no way to blame for the accident, the majority of the fault lies with the motorcyclist for either not paying attention, following too close or riding too fast for the conditions allow.

I rear ended a car on a motorbike once, on that occasion I was riding too fast for the conditions. This was all because I was in a hurry to get to the newsagents before they shut to get some stupid magazine, which incidentally wasn't out.

You should count yourself lucky in a way, had that motorcyclist overtaken the car instead of rear ending it, then the outcome could of been very different.

As everyones said, it is in no way your fault.

I had a similar situation last year. Unfortunately I was in the position of the biker and broke my elbow and hand.

Mine was caused when a pavement cyclist came flying towards a pedestrian crossing before braking at the last minute.
The car in front of me did do an emergency stop but my brakes weren't as good

Part of me blamed the pavement cyclist, but in reality I was the one who didn't give leave enough room to stop safely.

Luckily the driver didn't contact me to pay for the damage to his car, and there was no damage to my bike, just me, but I'll mend....eventually.

Thanks,
I didnt step out of the safety / traffic island anyway.
I saw the second car so I abord the crossing, but i was worried at one point that the bike could have crashed into the island.

I was lucky that I wasn’t stunted by the accident, so I could help the motor cyclist immediately. But I was suppressed that I have decide not to jump away from the flying bike (and it was the right decision).

Do the biker a favour; say the driver reversed into him. Failing this do an Arsene Wenger: 'I didn't see it.'

2 wheels better than 4.

Why would you do that? If the motorcyclist couldn't stop in time, it's his own lookout. Unthinkingly bleating "four wheels bad, two wheels good" does no one any favours, least of all the car driver whose only "crime" was to stop to allow a pedestrian to cross.

Stopping on the carriageway is wrong and should be a mandatory 3 points. It causes accidents.

That's as maybe. But it's still the motorcyclist's job to keep a safe distance behind which will allow him to stop if he needs to. Stopping on the carriageway "causes accidents" only if the person behind isn't paying enough attention to stop in time.

It causes accidents because people drive too fast, too close without paying proper attention to the road & are only looking for the normal things not the unexpected.

It's not just the vehicles behind that are at risk from these Walter Raleighs of the roads it's pedestrians crossing and bike riders.

And yes 2 wheels are good 4 wheels bad. It's my prejudice and I am happy with it.
