Somebody lent me a bike in South Africa and for some reason it had a 60 or 62 tooth ring fitted! Ridiculous!

Not really when you consider what it's there for.
Apparently SA riders spend a long time drafting trucks on their freeways. A good way of getting quickly across big flat bits to get to the hills.
I can see the point of a really big ring for that.
