Genesis bikes have put Sora gearing on their 2017 Adventure bike.

Not being a snob....oh yes you are....but isn't Sora right at the bottom of any gearing list or am I mistaken and Sora is pretty good kit?

Well, not right at the bottom, Claris and Tourney are below it.

I only looked at Tiagra and above in 2012, because I didn't want a button to change down, but I believe they have dispensed with it now. I'd assume it is at least as good as 2012 Tiagra, which was quite acceptable at the time (oh, except the shifters on mine broke, but that's not a common fault)

Or you could google

Internal cabling so better than 2012 Tiagra.

Like all manufacturers, they put different groupsets on bikes at different price points. Mosts manufacturers who have varying specs on the same frame go at least as "low" as Sora. Giant go from Ultegra down to Claris, for example (5 models).

you can get Tiagra for more money and 105 if you are will to cough up a bit more than that.

Or just buy the frame and build it up yourself.

Isn't the CdF the cheaper version of the Croix de Fer? (Heavier tubing??).
If I'm right there then a lower level and arguably better value (does the same job, may be a bit clunky, but for less money) groupset may be the right thing to get the right price to sell the bike.

If I'm wrong, which I often am, then this is just yet more pointless wibbling.

I think the CdF is the Croix de Fer, but it looks like the CDA is a cheaper version - alu not steel though.

Edit and the Croix de Fer has a sora version this year, too, so it's not a change.

Hmmm. I just went to the Genesis website and you may be right ... now. I couldn't find a bike called a CDF (as opposed to Croix de Fer)

But twas not ever thus. The CDF used to be a cheaper version of the Croix de Fer. I checked to make sure I wasn't going even dafter in my old age than I thought I was and I found this from 2012 "Genesis say the Croix de Fer is one of their most popular bikes, so they decided to introduce a little brother: the CdF. The frame has the same dimensions, but is made from Reynolds 520, as opposed to the Croix de Fer's 725." Here's one: linky

So I wasn't right. But I wasn't entirely wrong either. Just a bit behind the times. As usual.

Edit. Ah ha.... in 2015 the CDF ceased to exist as a separate bike, according to this blog "There’s been a cheaper model in the line for 3 years – confusingly called the Cdf. 2015 tidies this up, by renaming and growing the range, using numbers to denote the different price " So the CDF became the Croix de Fer 10. And the Croix de Fer became ... oh I don't know.

So, back to the OP. The Croix de Fer 10 is cheaper steel and equipped with Sora 9 speed. As would befit an entry level bike. But if you go up the Croix de Fer range you get whizzier groupsets and lighter frames.

No wonder they have got rid if it. It's terrible marketing. I'd seen that written down and always assumed it was just insider talk for Croix de Fer. If I bought a crois de fer I would immediately refer to it in writing as a CdF. It would be like someone running a shorter version of the Tour de France and calling it the TDF.

Are you referring to the famous TdF, South East London's premier cycling event based in Forest Hill? ;)

I'm going to be decking out my new Frame (thorn audax 853) with the 2016 Tiagra so far i bought the Triple chainset and front and rear mechs have to say i'm well impressed, tad heavier than the 105 but if it preforms as good as the 105 im a happy camper.
