Cell phone question

My cell phone has decided it is "Emergency calls only", which is troublesome because I'm waiting on a couple of important calls. So far I've established that:

1. Sim card is installed, PIN correct.
2. I have credit on my account
3. The local tower is working.
4. I can still go online.

What might be switched off that I haven't come across?
Is there a way to take calls through my W-lan connection? If so, how do I switch that on?

Try taking the SIM out and wiping the contacts.

Try taking the SIM out and wiping the contacts.

I tried that. It said:

"No SIM Card" "No Service"
Placed SIM into phone
"Enter PIN"
Entered Pin and...
"No service"
It seems to register the SIM, but not understand that this means it should connect.
Maybe I should just order a new SIM card.

iPhones have call over wifi option in the settings.

Sadly, I don't know. Presumably if the phone is set up on your wiffy it'll do it automatically when in range, but one of our more tech literate younger comoadres will know more.

Alternatively get them to call you through WhatsApp (assuming you have installed)

Is it an Adroid phone?
If so you could try try clearing the SIM toolkit cache from within settings/apps.

That's assuming he's in range of a WiFi network he can connect to.
