hi

i was on my 2nd ride today and changed gear on the front gears and didnt catch it right and the chain came off the cogs? i thought this was a thing of the past, i did try to change gear and nudge it on whilst coasting but no luck. had to stop and pull the chain free as caught in the frame and than on the 2nd try it worked

was just curious if there was a issue with my bike or is this still the norm... (only had the bike a few days after 15 years or driving not cycling)

Many Thanks

It sounds like the stop screws on the front dérailleur aren't adjusted properly. These should stop the chain jumping off when shifting.

Bicycletutor have just gone behind a pay wall, so this video seems to be a decent alternative

IME this is depressingly 'normal'. I find on my road bike it helps to remember not to run the chain across from largest front to largest rear or vice-versa.

Personally I usually prefer to use hub gears instead, but they are not without their problems either.

Started young, and still going.

A couple of minutes and some slight adjustment of the stop screws should do the trick. Did the chain come off the big chainring, or off the little one? Doesn't really matter, but gives you a pointer as to which stop screw needs the adjustment.

Even with the screws adjusted properly it is still possible for the chain to drop off the smaller ring. You can buy a device (which I forget the name of) to prevent this.

It was a source of great commentator debate in last years coverage of the Tour de France when Andy Schleck's chain came off and effectively lost him the tour. I think he did actually have one fitted so its not a great advert.

I've only had the bike 3 days. It's come all setup from Evans. I dare not touch it to make it worse. Will take it back and get them to have a butchers.

Maybe it was me. I'm gonna give it a chance and see how it goes. If it keeps happening I'll take it in. If not I got a free service in 4-6 weeks. I'll mention it to them then.

Just wanted to know if it's still something that happens. I'm sure it still does even if it's setup right

Its more likely to happen to me if I'm wrongly in the small/ small combination (38t small chainring/ 11t small cog) and I throw it up to the large chainring quickly.
