So arrived at work late and covered in oil which is never good!
Also now my chain is stuck on the small ring (next to the pedals, dont know what the real word is!) and won't change up to the large one which is where I always have it set as there are no hills on my commute. Is there any way to fix this? I'd have thought the angle of the metal bit that pulls the chain over must have changed but am not 100% sure. I'd welcolme any suggestions as I might get some rubber gloves and have a look at it on my lunch break.

Loose or snapped cable or knocked the front mech out of straight. The cage of the mech should be parallel to the chain rings.

Easy fix

as above for the diagnosis but to avoid the oily hands, a couple of pairs of latex gloves should be an essential part of your ride kit. they keep your hands clean in situations like this and are useful for a bit of protection when fixing those punctures you get in the cold or rain (or all of them as they're known )

I've just called my local bike shop who've said they'll fix it for free when I buy some new brake pads this evening. I'll get them to show me how they've done it though!

Thanks for everyone's advice, I do feel a bit bad for asking and then wussing out and taking it to the shop but I was worried I'd make it worse.

Anyway it all ended bizarrely as it happens, took it in for a service and picked it up this morning. On the ride home the chain starts slipping off the top gears again. Great I think, I'll take it back to the shop to give them a piece of my mind for doing a crappy job. Nearly at the shop in the middle of a busy junction and the bloody pedal falls off in the middle of the road!

Turns out the reason it was slipping wasn't the cables or the derallieur but the fact the pedals had come loose so the rings themselves weren't staying in one place, and to top it off the mechanic at the shop had not only missed it but made it worse!

I thought I was remarkable calm considering but on the flip side I did get a service for free as there was no way I was leaving the shop without getting my money back.
