Is there a decent quality chain on sale (6 speed) that has straight joining rivets rather than the ones that need special and expensive rivets.

The old style chain has served millions of people almost since chains were invented.

On 5, 6 or 7 speed chains you can use a chain rivet tool to split and rejoin the chain in the traditional manner. These chains are all the same and could be labelled for 5, 6 or 7 speed.
On 9, 10 or 11 speed chains you must rejoin the chain using a special link or rivet.
On 8 speed chain you can rejoin with a chain tool if you are careful, but a link is more reliable.

At the risk of inviting hails of derision, I've been re-joining 9 (and now 10 speed chains) for years just using the chain rivet tool without any problems.

The only time I've ever had a chain fail on me was when for a change, I used a KMC link, and it broke after 2,000 miles.
