I was just about to park my bike and the chain popped off (cycling) popped it back on and now some of my gears seem to be a bit, well, strange. wont engage straight away, when it does it makes an awful noise.

Any ideas?

do they just need re-indexing?

1. Your cables need the tension adjusting
2. Your chain/gears are worn

If the noise is coming from the cassette area just turn the bike up and turn the pedals - you should be able to see if the chain is brushing against one of the adjacent sprockets in which case all you need do is turn the adjuster to bring the chain into direct line with the sprocket it is on.

You need to adjust your cable tension first to eliminate this as a cause. Then go onto Bicycletutor.com or whatever to see how to set up the rear derailluer so it can't throw the chain.

If it happened at the front, same again, check tension in the cable then adjust the front mech
