Cheers all! I've had a much more successful day today. Chain has been shortened (Potsy, your link worked a treat!), new front gear cable also fitted. I've still got an annoying click though but as the rear gear cable is about to go, I'll wait until I've changed that before I worry too much. And that's a job for the weekend.
With the help of a lot of people on CC I've learnt how to change most things on my bike myself now so thanks for your patience. I may even clean the bike more often too....
Remaining things I need to learn:
Changing gear levers completely and by association doing bar tape.
Changing derailleurs but now I've changed gear cables, that looks straightforward
Truing a wheel (I can sort out a buckle just about) but it would be good to be able to properly dish and tension a wheel.
