What wrong with rinsing it off after a ride, drying it then oiling. If particularly dirty then a bucket of soapy water / brush.
I have only ever removed a chain if damaged. And usually get 2 /3 year out of a chain

Gotta ask how much cycling you do if they last long.

And the accrington clinate isn't exactly kind to bikes.

A chain can last a very, very long time. My aunt Edna has a bicycle in her garage with a 48 year old chain. She rides it regularly to church and back, whenever a Sunday falls on the 29th of February and it doesn't rain.

Life's too short to arse about with chains.
Wipe it down when cruddy, give a little Mickle and de-clag jockey wheels and cassette when required. Keep chainset looking nice though :-)
I replace chains on my most used bikes every spring whether they need it or not.
