These links may be of use, no experience of most of these shops myself but I think Scott's in Rubery are run by the same family as the Hall Green shop, and Hall Green is a proper old style shop. Hawk cycles listed in the sandwell link are more of a factory outlet, I didn't have a good experience with the one in Birmingham but others opinions seem to vary.

I fitted the Taya one to my fixer the other day. It's not quite as described up thread - the pins do lock into position, as there is an element of bending needed to fit it. Hard to describe but seems a sensible design. Not meant to be reused though, unlike the Sram product.

I'd say you suffered from poor installation rather than poor product.
