Chain snap!!

Experienced a very jumpy chain this morning on the way in, the rear mech was catching and I thought it was just a matter of GT85 squirting required...
However, halfway round a particularly busy motorway roundabout my chain decided to snap completely
Now this is probably my own fault.. despite only owning the bike since the end of May I've clocked just over 3,000 miles on it so the chain replacement was overdue. I just thought i'd be suffering from a bit of stretch, not be in danger of a snap.

Anyway, no spare links so emergency call to get picked up and had to drive into work with my tail between my legs.

The worst thing is that I've had a KMC chain and power links in my wiggle basket for a few weeks, i was just waiting till payday. Stupid sod's law.

This was on your Boardman?

Same thing happened to me on the original chain on my old Boardman. I was lucky, half the link had snapped and it held together until I got home.

Yeah on the CX. Surprised as it's a KMC chain which are supposed to be pretty good quality.

Are we thinking it's just that the chain came to the end of its life? Should I have looked after it better, or is it just one of those things?

Is this on a 10 speed bike?
I'd have thought it would need replacing well before 3000 miles, my Shimano one was past the .75 wear point after only 700 miles, will see how the kmc one gets on

Actually lejogg, pound to a penny you are going to need a new cassette.

Don't fall in the trap of cleaning your existing cassette and getting the drivetrain nice and clean, installing the new chain and the chain jumps in the sprockets. Then having to buy a new cassette and be without your main bike for a few days. What fool would do such a thing?

Maybe not, I was surprised a few weeks back when I changed my 10speed KMC at 3900 miles, bought a new cassette but didn't need it, the new chain fits perfectly with the old cassette, no slippage.

Had a chain snap once (was complaining all morning) about 3 miles from my office. I didnt have a chain tool...nor the talent to use one, so opted for lowering the seat and "scooting" like one of those old victorian Dandy Horse's, for the last 3 miles.

Big time bruises!

Yep it's the 10 speed on my boardman cx. I think that's the problem - I need to think more about wear in mileage terms rather than age. I am also pretty inexperienced with regards to gauging wear on a chain and what I should be doing to maintain it better.

What on earth are you doing to your chain Potsy? Even I can get around 2000 miles out of a 10 speed Shimano chain.

I was conscious of that... although hadn't planned on replacing the cassette. Was hoping to get another chain life from it before needing one, but I guess if I've let the chain get that worn it may well have done some damage.
We're too early in the year to be thinking about getting the carbon out too
