Chain Wax, Oil…..or ‘Revolube’ !

I'm a new convert to Squirt - loving it so far !

I'm a long term user of Rock and Roll Blue but they don't seem to sell it anywhere in the UK now so going to need to find an alternative once my current supply runs out.

I use a thing called ProLink Gold. I bought a vat of it and am slowly working my way through it. I liked it because it wasn’t sticky like the competition 15 years ago and it just goes on with a 3 ml pipette.

Well it’s silent and smooth as butter. Feels like hot dipped wax so maybe the price is worth saving the hassle.

Awesome start 😁 How’s longevity ? What about re-application ? I take it (Like waxing) you completely stripped the whole drivetrain before moving across to this ?

It lasts longer than you’d think. It cleans the links out so some times I’ve just re-added over the top without having to full re-strip. That’s my favourite part. Less de greasing.
I don’t go on wet rides with it though.

Thanks. With the online / Site reviews and your experience - i think it’s just what I’m looking for; and can use on the whole fleet. I had a free postage discount code. So have just bought a couple of bottles 👍

Most of my riding is in mixed weather, and mixed condition rides - i.e. it's rare I do a completely road ride - the bike I use also does off road, and only in recent months has it been silly dry, but until May, the tracks were still quite wet. Works if you do road rides and aren't commuting, then I may look at waxed chains when I retire. Waxed chains on MTB - no chance. I'm a one solution does all bikes ! A wet oil does that.

I ride road and gravel all year round and run waxed chains all year round. They work in all weathers for recreational riding. As I said earlier I'm not so sure about winter commuting.

Perhaps as @EckyH says if one dries the chain and reapplies it does. I only commuted for one winter. I had time to clean and lube my bike at the weekend. I didn't have time to dry the chain and apply wax whenever it rained, which seemed often.

I tried squirt a while, but it did not last more than 200 miles, and washed out at merest hint of rain. I cannot be doing with applying it weekly or even daily during my Audax events. Oil, I will get around 800 miles between applications and used sparingly with wipe down chain stays pretty clean. Plus for £14 you get a litre not 50ml of snake oil.

I’m ordering more soon, I tried going back to traditional wet oil and regretted it. Noise noticed more than ever & too dirty. Ok for commuting but on your best bikes Silca all the way.

I do ‘apologise’ - I originally replied to you when you quoted someone else. And I now realise (After reading properly 🤣) you weren’t talking about Revolube: but Silca….

Either way - I’m really intrigued by the Revolube. And there’s only one way for me to find out ! So I’ve already gone for it in terms of ordering as above. With 9 bikes and an OCD over dirty drivetrains; oil based lube cleaning / re-application is taking up enough of my time. And I’ve briefly tried wax already too. So this might appeal…..

AND this afternoon I’ve spend an hour thoroughly cleaning the ‘hardest’ to clean drivetrain in readiness. *Because: it’s a full 1/2 link chain that I really don’t want to remove, because it has no split link per-se. And with the typical, modern BMX; super short chain stays - it’s a t^*t to remove the wheel without scratching frame, drivetrain etc.

So I’ve literally ‘jet-washed’ the chain with a syringe. Doing multiple rotations of the chain until both wiping rag and fluid were clear and spotless. Teeth in front / rear sprockets and sprockets themselves were meticulously cleaned with 30-40 cotton buds soaked in Spirit. I’d eat my dinner off any of it 😉

Will do an honest report once I’ve applied to a few bikes and done a few rides in varying scenarios 👍

The outgoing: Fenwicks Professional; Oil based leaves the quietest drivetrain and the slickest gear changes up to 100 miles. After that the performance drop off is noticeable but doesn’t fall off a cliff so to speak. ‘Easily’ the best of 6 or more top rated Oil based lubes I’ve tried.

I can’t remember which (Drip) Wax was I tried. I know I wouldn’t have skimped and would have done all due research though. And an OCD application is a given 🤣 I THINK I perhaps tried an ‘All year round’ variant ? And it ‘failed’ to impress (In Winter ?). Knowing my patience / tolerance lever; I suspect I quickly moved on.

My point is - if Revolubes doesn’t hit the mark: I’m not sure where I go next.

*Lowering expectation perhaps 😉

Performance is ace. The available time needed for a ‘refresh clean’ every few rides isn’t. My Silver chain went Black within 100 miles. It must attract / hold the dirt……
