Is it possible to get chainring bolts which use a hex key on either side?
The ones I got at the moment use that stupid slot thing that is flipping useless!

Gaz you can get a little key spanner to fit the slots. Once you have one of these it is a piece of cake undoing/tightening chain ring bolts. I got mine from CRC iirc about 6-7 years ago for about £3. I know rip off for what it is, but it has proved invaluable. On the other end are the two spiggots for undoing the cap bolt covers on Shimano chainsets such as Ultegra Octalink of which I have many. It also fits Campag and FSA chainsets. HTH.

I've got one and it's a pile of crap. Either that or the current bolts I have are a pile of crap.

I find that with an ample amount of lubrication with a machine type oil that finger pressure on the back side of the chainring bolt is enough to stop it from moving, and by the time it starts getting tight not even that is needed.

Oh. I guess you are trying to undo the chain ring bolts? Did you grease them before tightening them previously? Sorry to ask a basic question as I know you are a proper cyclist. My spanner has been ok, it's not the most robust thing, but it does the job.

Nah, the bolts are coming loose as I'm riding, so much so that the front chainring is moving a few cm's. I'm trying to tighten them up and the tool isn't gripping the female part of the bolt, It just slips.

Is there a trick to using it?

Seems to be better this morning after doing a proper tightening last night. Will still upgrade the bolts over the Christmas break.

Believe it or not, I grease my bolt threads. Ensure chainrings are clean and outer surfaces of the bolts, but then grease the thread and tighten up - you usually don't need the 'spanner' especially with double rings - single chain rings yes.

If they are steel bolts, I'd give them a good clean up and re-grease. Wouldn't bother with alloy - you've got to be very careful as they snap !
