Are chainsets speed specific? By that I mean can you use a chainset that was on a 9 speed setup with a 10 or 11 speed setup? Eg, Shimano 5700 (10spd) with 5800 (11spd) shifters & rear cassette.

9 should be OK on 10, but possibly too wide for 11 speed chains. Stronglight and TA do rings that are 9-10 speed compatible.

You may get away with 10 to 11 !

Yes - but with limits.

I run an 11 speed crankset on a 10 speed setup to get the 52:36 front cranks.

My cross bike runs 9 speed with a 10 speed crankset.

Hmm, I'm thinking of going the other way, running a 9 speed crankset on an 11 speed cassette.. Maybe I should just stop being tight and buy a new set of rings.

Eg, Shimano 5700 (10spd) with 5800 (11spd) shifters & rear cassette.

Can't do 5700 (rear shifter) with 5800 due to cable pull ratio. I have 5700 and have just bought a 5800 front derailleur. Many people say it won't work, but some others say it will. I have yet to try it.
