Chainset question

Started to gather bits to convert the Trek 800 to 9-speed. It occurred to me that the chainset, being a 7-speed originally, might not cope with a 9-speed chain, although it's been entirely OK with an 8-speed setup.
Do I need a new one?

Good news, although quite old, it's not particularly worn.

No, it's only 10+ that use a thinner roller width.

9 speed chains have a narrower outer width, but the same inner width as 7/8 speed.

I use a 7 speed crankset with 8 speed rear, works perfectly.

Fab, dont need to get new, then. Will probably put on a set from an 8-speed bike, simply because I have it, and it will match the remaining parts of the groupset.
