I need to replace my brake pads, truth be told I should have done it a while ago...

They are cantilever brakes. I accidentally bought the type with a smooth pole sticking out, whereas mine need a shorter threaded pole. Doh!

Are they compatible with other types of threaded brake blocks, or must they specifically say "cantilever" on the packet?

Go to a local bike shop and they will be able to offer the correct type in a variety of makes, quality and prices. Take one of the current ones with you.

There are two basic types:

One's with a ridged or smooth pole which goes through a hole in a mounting on the brake and a nut on the other side of the mounting is tighten to trap the pole in position.

The other is a pad with threaded pole which goes into a slot on the brakes and a nut on the threaded bit tightens the pad up

They are not inter-changeable.
