This is just a whimsy really because I'd probably never do it by choice.

But.... is there a simple way to change a cable outer, keeping the original inner? The end of the cable inner always frays in my experience and would be tricky if not impossible to thread through the outer without snagging.

Does anyone do this? Is there a way to do it?

a dab of solder or super glue will keep the cables from unfraying

I often reuse the rear inner cable on the front. But to be honest I buy the inners in bulk from Decathlon and if in doubt I replace them. I also bought Park cable cutters which are amazing

But if the cable is stainless steel, it won't take solder.
If its any steel, galvanised, normal steel, stainless steel...OP'll be highly unlikely to get solder to adhere, even less so if the cabled aged, dirty or corroded.

There's a twist to the inner strands of the inner cable, as you feed the cable into the outer, twist the inner so strands don't unravel. Bit of lubrication down the outer too...usually works.

TBF, new inners aren't that expensive....all nice and shiny too
